Blog #73 Why doesn’t the Batman just kill the Joker?

the batman and Joker are connected in one of the strangest bonds in the dc universe. Batman won’t kill Joker and Joker won’t kill him yet he will continue to kill others, its an infinite cycle. Comparing this to the trolley problem if the joker was the trolley, batman would have the choice of the trolley running off a cliff with the joker inside or let the trolley go straight into a highly populated area with someone giving him a medal. Should Batman kill the Joker? Yes he should however the point of his comic is that he isn’t this perfect being and this non-killing code of his keeps him in a state of moral limbo where he doesn’t fit on the side of good or evil, hence why he is a anti-hero in my eyes. Killing the Joker would lead to less crime by looking at the Joker’s body count on a regular basis. Utilitarianism for me only works when its something that can truly affect the majority. For the case of the joker killing him would be better for society and that argument is valid however, if you could push two different buttons to decide if two kids or a grandparent dies than that is your choice alone, the better for the majority doesn’t apply to something so small and for lack of a better word, insignificant. To work for the majority honestly is a valid thing to strive for but if you say for example that I must support this author for the benefit of humanity getting more of his books than you don’t seem to understand the true usefulness of utilitarianism. Now, should heroes have a no killing code? No since that would physically hinder them from in some cases saving lives from those who would be in the wrong. It would be nice if they could find a way to allow everyone to live but if its the only option they should take it instead of trying to work around their own self-righteousness.
